For many, fishing in Oklahoma is a way of life. Every license bought assists the state’s conservation efforts and also aids in the introduction of fish species such as striped bass, trout, and saugeye.

Obtaining a license is the simple part. Finding a fantastic fishing spot is a little more difficult. But we’re here to change that with our top five Oklahoma fishing destinations.

Vinita Lake Park (View Map)

Vinita lake has been identified as a renowned largemouth bass fishing destination. Because the use of gas-powered vehicles is restricted, this reservoir is ideal for a peaceful day of fishing.

Currently, the lake is only available from sunrise to sundown on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It does include a boat ramp, fire rings, and picnic areas, but there’s no camping allowed.

Canton Lake (View Map)

Canton Lake is located on State Highway 51 in northwest Oklahoma, near the town of Canton, and is the state’s best-known and most productive walleye lake. But that’s not all this lake has to offer as it offers black bass, striped bass hybrid, white bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, and carp fishing too.

Of course, the star of the show is the walleye. According to the Canton Times, the total recorded catch in 2018 included 142 walleye totaling more than 570 pounds.

Robbers Cave State Park (View Map)

Robbers Cave State Park in Latimer County, five miles north of the little town of Wilburton on State Highway 2, has many bass lakes, several hiking trails, and outlaw stories to boot.

The small collection of lakes are awesome to visit, hike, and fish on any given day. Top-water baits and spinners are most effective in the early summer, so now is the time to pay this state park a visit.

All bodies of water are no-wake lakes, but they are large enough to accommodate a small fishing boat with a trolling engine. Coon Creek is the most remote, with a gravel road that may be washed away after severe rains.

Medicine Creek (View Map)

The Oklahoma Wildlife Department stocks delicious rainbow trout in Medicine Creek during the winter months, although according to those who know, the fishing is excellent all year.

Because granite rock borders the creek’s banks, it’s a great, family-friendly destination and simple for youngsters to reach.

The Little Dam Bait Shop in Medicine Park is a solid place for fishing advice and for anybody who wants to pick up live bait, ice, and other supplies before hitting the lake. After a day of fishing, there are restaurants and stores within walking distance.

Lake Altus-Lugert (View Map)

Lake Altus-Lugert’s average size largemouth bass weighs three to five pounds, making this 6,260-acre lake a must-visit for any serious fisherman!

Top-water fishing in shallows and along drop-offs is excellent in early summer. Some fishermen like working the huge boulders with a jig, but in these clear waters, finesse fishing approaches may also mislead the bass.

In certain circumstances, drop-shotting your favorite bait worm, employing a shaky head in smaller rock areas or targeting drop-offs with a tube are all viable options. In the early summer, you’ll want top-water baits that move a lot of water.
