Market at Eastpoint More than a Community-Led Grocery Store

The Market at Eastpoint is a grocery store serving Northeast Oklahoma City that is run by local community members with the intention of creating reliable food access, raising awareness, and supporting local causes.

A Symbol of Community Collaboration Event

The Market at Eastpoint invited the entire city to partake in the celebration of a big, collaborative event on Wednesday, April 21. It was an occasion that inspired dancing inspired by the Douglass High School marching band.

Since another neighboring alternative supermarket concept closed in August 2019, inhabitants of the city were traveling by bus for up to 1.5 hours each way to get to the nearest grocery store.

More than a grocery store, the 6,800-square-foot market at 1708 NE 23rd Street is a community gathering place. For many, it is a sign of optimism.

Restore OKC, a non-profit focusing on putting together northeast side resources, started operating an organic farm and micro-grocer at their five-acre urban farm at 2222 NE 27th before the market was formally planned.

The Market at Eastpoint opened its doors less than a year later with shelves filled with fresh produce from the farm as well as a wide range of items sourced from Homeland Stores.

Market at Eastpoint Pillars of Success

According to the Market at Eastpoint’s website, the concept was formed and thrives on three key areas: give, engage, and amplify.

To give is to contribute to food security, equal education, fair housing, sustainable prosperity, or the resources that enable the members to do our job.

Engage by rallying coworkers and clients to support causes, raise money, and spread the message.

And amplify by helping share the experiences of individuals and partnerships that empower vendors and the foundations that focus on restorative justice and a more reconciled city.
