Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash musical “Hamilton” is returning to the Civic Center Music Hall as part of Oklahoma City Broadway’s new season. OKC’s upcoming subscription season will include the Oklahoma City debuts of “Hadestown,” the Tony and Grammy award-winning show, as well as “Tootsie,” the stage version of the popular movie that starred Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange, and Disney’s blockbuster “Frozen.” Oklahoma City Broadway has a lot of hits in store for audiences this upcoming season, with “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Hairspray” also returning.
As if their lineup of six shows weren’t enough, OKC Broadway announced on March 31 that they would be bringing back “Cats” and “The Book of Mormon” for a special season of performances.
Current OKC’s Broadway Season Still Underway
Oklahoma City Broadway’s current run is underway and is bringing touring musicals back to Oklahoma City after a year-long intermission due to COVID-19.
The Civic Center is going to be buzzing this spring. “The Lion King” returns for three weeks starting May 11, followed by the screen-to-stage adaptation of “Pretty Woman: The Musical” from August 16 to October 21. Then Rain — A Tribute to the Beatles gets back on stage at the Civic Center on April 19 for an exceptional one-night-only performance of their “The Best of Abbey Road Live.”
OKC’s Next Broadway Season
OKC Broadway is starting off the 2022-2023 season with “Hairspray” from September 6 to the 11th. The Tony Award-winning musical comedy, set in 1960s Baltimore, follows teenage dreamer Tracy Turnblad, who tries out to dance on a popular TV series. The show features “RuPaul’s Drag Race” standout Andrew Levitt (aka Nina West) as Tracy’s mom, Edna Turnblad.
After “Hairspray” comes “Hadestown” — winner of eight 2019 Tony awards, including Best Musical and 2020’s Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album — tells the story of the mythological stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as Hades and Persephone, King and Queen of the Underworld.
“Tootsie,” a new musical opening in Oklahoma City on November 15, will run through November 20. Like the 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman, the show follows a talented actor who’s having trouble getting work due to his stubborn and difficult reputation. He then has an idea to pretend to be a woman to get more gigs.
OKC Starts Off 2022-2023 Broadway Season With “Cats” Followed by “The Book of Mormon”
Oklahoma City’s Broadway will end 2022 with two famous specials. The most popular Broadway musical of all time, “Cats,” will have a limited run from Dec. 30-Jan. 1, while the highly acclaimed and award-winning comedy “The Book of Mormon” will have a limited run from Jan. 13-15. We also have a “Jesus Christ Superstar” production coming to the Hollywood Bowl on February 14th-19th.
Disney’s “Frozen” is coming to OKC in March 2022. Originally slated to come during 2020-2021 season, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the release date to be pushed back to the spring of 2023. The stage version of this Oscar-winning animated film features familiar songs and a dozen new songs by the award-winning songwriters of the movie’s songs.
The season will finish with “Hamilton,” showing May 24-June 4, 2023. The show has so far won Grammy, Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
