The Board of Education for the district in Oklahoma City voted unanimously to fire six teachers for refusing to wear while on the job.

A hearing took place on Wednesday, November 3rd, to hear testimony from the teachers. After hearing from the teachers, the board members that were present took nearly two hours to come to a unanimous decision to terminate the employment of the six teachers.

This hearing came about when the Superintendent recommended that the six teachers be fired for refusal to comply with the requirements from the district, stating that all students and teachers must wear masks to attempt to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The district requirement allows students to not wear masks for medical, religious and a few other reasons.

Teachers do not have as many options as they are only allowed to opt-out of wearing masks for medical reasons. The teachers who lost their jobs only stated that they were not wearing masks because of strong personal reasons.

Most of the teachers filed a lawsuit against OKC schools on September 2nd, asking the judge to rule that the district policy forcing masks on students and staff is unlawful and a violation of our rights. The teachers now plan to amend their current lawsuit to add wrongful termination.
