The University of Oklahoma recently honored two students by presenting them with the Kennedy Engineering Leadership Award. One was recognized for their leadership and contributions to the engineering community at OU, and the other was praised for their leadership and contributions to the engineering community outside of OU.
In a world where many engineers are overlooked, it’s great to see some getting recognition for their efforts. A senior double majoring in architectural engineering and mathematics, Miguel Payan from Oklahoma City found himself praised with the prestigious Kennedy leadership award. Along with that award, also present was Rachel Penner from Tijeras, New Mexico. Although a student of engineering physics, she too received the award.
The Jerry Holmes Leadership Program awards are given to two engineering students each year for their outstanding leadership skills. The award is worth $3,500 and was established by 1955 engineering alumni Bill Kennedy.
Payan is not only a talented engineer but also president of OU’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) chapter. His engineering prowess shined when he was named one of the Top 10 Seniors. He was also admitted to PE-ET, OU’s senior honor society.
Penner is a co-founder of the OU chapter of SEDS. For her work with the chapter, she won the Jeff Bezos Leadership Award, given out by the national SEDS organization.
